Legion Of The Damned: Cult of the dead

27/11/08  ||  Euthanatos

As you should be aware (if not, get the fuck out of here, you poser), I recently wrote a review on Legion of the Damned’s re-release of “Feel the Blade”. I thought it was pretty damn cool, blackened thrash at its best. Alas, as I mentioned, that was merely a re-release, a re-hash, a re-up. This is the real motherfucking deal, the new album, the latest release, I bring you “Cult of the Dead”, just over 40 minutes of zombiefied metal, fast riffs, fury in a bottle. Or a CD. Or an MP3 folder.

There’s something dirty about the production here, though, it’s much murkier than “Feel the Blade”, and that kinda pisses me off. Granted, there’s a blackish influence here, but still, I like my metal crisp. This is not crisp. This is a goat being beheaded and its flailing body being stuck down my ears. However, it doesn’t compromise the album much.

The album begins with an eerie and bombastic intro, with a cheesy narration and everything. From then on, it’s pretty much mayhem. Not the band, I mean chaos, destruction, pure fucking Armageddon. See what I did there? Tee hee. But, truth be told, I haven’t made up my mind if this is actually better than “Feel the Blade”. Actually, it seems the band is pretty much repeating themselves, stick to the formula, no adventures here. The most innovative thing is the label jackass telling me this is a promo. No shit, Sherlock.

I really like several songs here, like “Black Templar”, “Black Wings of Yog Sothoth” and “Necrosophic Rapture”. All fucking fast songs that surely made the guitar players’ fingers bleed. And that’s how good metal is made.

I don’t know what I was expecting from Legion of the Damned, perhaps a bit of some unexplored territory, but whenever anyone does that, I call them gay, so don’t listen to me, I take a lot of medication. Nothing new from the Legion, if you’ve hear them before, you’ll get the same shit all over again. Still, I can’t deny it’s extremely fun.

The cover: Well, it has zombies, the undead, whatever you want to call it, AND some of them are eating the putrid flesh of the Nazarene, so that makes it an automatic 10 in my book.

6 rotting corpses of raped nuns out of 10.
